the Ecoprod charter

We signed a charter that corresponded to us and committed us: The Eco-Prod charter. What is Ecoprod? Ecoprod is a non-profit association recognized as being of general interest, which aims to ensure the mobilization of professionals in the audiovisual sector in the ecological transition of the sector. Ecoprod’s ambition is to advance and federate all the players in the audiovisual sector by engaging them in virtuous environmental practices. And at Audacieuse-Galerie, it spoke to us immediately, because we have been working in the direction of this charter for a long time. By signing, we are committing ourselves and in our eyes, it is a better step.

In concrete terms, what does reducing your ecological footprint mean for our studio?

Increasing the lifespan of our equipment

Innovation accelerates the obsolescence of our equipment. Barely out of the box, a new camera model was born: even more ingenious, with ever higher definitions, and very accelerated speeds. However, you will agree, the equipment evolves in small steps, and before it is totally obsolete, it can take some time. The difference from one month to the next does not raise such a different picture. A microphone will remain a microphone, and will only be changed every 5 to 10 years. When purchased, our equipment is chosen for its functional and technological durability but also for its eco-design. We gain from depreciation but also from ecological footprint. And it’s great.

Technological advances, however, interesting

The light capture capabilities of our cameras have increased significantly in recent years, from ISO 3200 to ISO 52000. A very good thing since we can film at night almost as well as in broad daylight, with little or no additional lighting. The need for lighting, batteries and generators has fallen sharply. It’s always that less. Even if the retro style of a Fresnel projector will never be replaced by our LED panels, they have strong advantages: Power and dimming, choice of colors, low heat, solid, durable, very low consumption, reduced wiring or on batteries. And here too, these are great energy savings.

Disks, a cloud, an internet server, computers.

The workflow is optimized from image and sound acquisition to broadcast. For current projects, we use reliable media: cards, secure hard disks and RAID servers. The cloud? We use it sparingly. Our cloud is only used for transfers to customers. Archive is stored offline, on DVD discs or on our old, slower, but still functional discs. Our web server is sized as accurately as possible. Regular maintenance lightens its load and its caching system. Finally, our computers are completely switched off after work.

Paperwork, dematerialized.

As far as possible, we dematerialize the paperwork. For mail, rather than an envelope, we prefer email, and when it is essential, we use recycled paper. There are some very beautiful ones today.

Batteries, microfibers, reusable.

By equipping ourselves with several sets of accumulators, in all their forms, we have reduced our chemical battery waste by a hundredfold. With a little organization, we recharge at night, and the batteries are back for a ride, with from 100 times to 1000 recharges for the most resistant. The impact is considerable: our mobile equipment runs on a lot of batteries. All our approaches are in this direction: microfibers rather than paper cloths, and reuse as soon as possible, rather than throw away.
