Hiro Tanaka began his photographic career in a singular way: by winning the first prize in a lottery in Tokyo, he was offered a free trip to the United States. This was his first foray into North America, where he met fans and members of hardcore and punk bands. From the 90s, he immersed himself in this universe, accompanying bands on tour throughout the United States. In 2012, three years after moving to California, he published “DEW DEW DEW Its”, a series of 108 color photographs taken during these tours.
In this series, Tanaka captures moments vibrating with energy, using flash to freeze the action and intensify visual perception. Each shot communicates an immediate experience, capturing the tumultuous and effervescent essence of punk concerts. His sharp eye and dynamic style make the intensity of each moment palpable, transforming his photographs into living testimonies of the underground music scene.
