Exhibition of fine art photography: Thierry Vezon

Great North, a world on borrowed time?" exhibition

The origin of this exhibition lies in the desire to share the emotion aroused by the beauty and fragility of the landscapes, wildlife and way of life of the inhabitants of the Far North.

The photographs presented were taken over the last ten years by photographer Thierry Vezon, mainly in Norway, Iceland, the Svalbard archipelago and Greenland, more specifically in the village of Tiniteqilaaq. This small village, with a population of around one hundred, is notable for the total absence of vehicles, the sledge being the only means of transport in winter. Traditionally, the fjord and the areas surrounding the village are covered in a thick layer of ice in winter, but this is beginning to change. Questions are being asked about the future of the Inuit way of life. Will dog sled teams be doomed to disappear? The number of fishermen in Norway's Lofoten Islands is already plummeting. What will happen in the years to come?

Svalbard is the scene of particularly rapid climate change: it is warming five times faster than the rest of the planet, snowfall is giving way to rain, the ice pack is weakening, glaciers are shrinking rapidly, and biodiversity, including birds, Arctic foxes and polar bears, is at risk. The photographs, imbued with serenity and often tinged with pastel tones, magnificently capture the marvellous winter ecosystems of the Far North and the way of life of its inhabitants. They provide a striking contrast to the threats facing these regions. This exhibition raises the crucial question: are we losing the North, literally and figuratively, as the saying goes?

Photographie Thierry Vezon

Thierry Vezon, a freelance photographer living in the Gard region of France, has devoted his life to photography since 2004. Although he enjoys travelling, particularly to the far north, his favourite places are in the south of France: Provence, the Camargue and the Cévennes. Specialising in wildlife and landscape photography, he spends long hours on the prowl, respecting nature. His speciality also includes aerial and reportage photography. Capturing fleeting moments, sharing the emotions felt in the field and bearing witness to the beauty of nature are essential aspects of his photographic work. He works with magazines in France (Terre Sauvage, Nat'images, Géo, etc.) and abroad (BBC Wildlife magazine, La Salamandre, Naturfoto, etc.). Between 2008 and 2023, he published around twenty books, the most recent of which are "Un voyage en hiver" and "Cévennes d'arbres et de pierres", both published by Alcide. His photographs are regularly exhibited at festivals and galleries.
