In New Orleans, far away from the famous French Quarter and the Uptown floats, the Mardi Gras Indians are a group of African-Americans whose tradition honors the Native Americans who protected escaped slaves in the 1800s. Every year they sew a new set of intricately beaded costumes completely by hand.
